Hello everyone I grew up on Edwards Branch. My Dad was the late Varnel Effler, whom I loved dearly. My Mom is Charlotte (Haynes) Rice. She is married at this time to Kenneth Rice. I have great memories growing up in Flag Pond. I miss the simple life of that time. I wish my kids could enjoy the simple pleasures of play in the creek and making a tree fort in the woods with all the neighbor kids. We drank from the creek and got snacks from the neighbors. What a great time. In now live in Jonesborough via Maryland for 15 years. I am proud to say I am from the POND. January 2 2010 I stumbled upon your community while riding backroads. I was supposed to be fly fishing but it was too cold and windy. As an Alabama country boy I have a soft spot for rural life. A correction on my earlier post. I meant the Over-Look was on the Right headed to NC and on the Left crossing in, much better views of course from the "old road" All my family is from Sams Gap so please if you know any of them I would love to hear from you...Thanks Oh yea…if you or anyone knows someone that works at Johnson City Medical Center there is a huge picture of my great-grand parents place in the "Board Room" if your ever there feel free to ask someone to see it. The picture was done for my papaw Jr. and dad Jeff, Thanks to John Melton, President of JCMC. He loved the picture so much that he chose this for his room. Danielle Metcalf-Whitson <dwhitson1113 yahoo.com> Erwin, TN Saturday, January 02, 2010 at 00:45:17 (EST) I'm not from Flag Pond but spent every summer, spring and winter there it seems. I was either in the fields in a play pin as baby on..., riding on the tractor with my papaw, picking up mator sticks or tobacco leaves, picking corn, digging tators, picking beans, you name it I've seen it in those feilds. My great-grand parents, grand parents and parents are from there. I am the great of the late Pritchard "Paul" and late Ruby Bailey Metcalf, the grand of the late Pritchard "Jr" and Myrtle Metcalf, and the daughter of Pritchard "Jeff" and Lisa Metcalf. My papaw Jr passed a little over 3 years ago and the memories will live on with many summers in the fields and many summers on granny Ruby's porch with the smell of great cooking in the kitchen. I miss her dearly; with not many years of her in my life I still remember them as yesterday. I am now 25 and wished my 6 yr old daughter could have only seen and ran the hills as I did as a child. So remember as you head up I-26 towards the NC state line, the look-out on the left theres a Green Sign "Metcalf Over-Look" if you stop and look down the valley you'll see why. It has Metcalf written all over it and always will in my heart. Danielle Metcalf-Whitson <dwhitson1113 yahoo.com> Erwin, TN. Saturday, January 02, 2010 at 00:04:09 (EST) Just passing through. "Wesley" Chandler owned and lived in the old white gingerbread house on Corn Branch up into the 1920s. The house still stands as of today, but is surrounded by the Sheriff's pistol range today, and is in quite some disrepair. GGG Grandpa Wesley is buried at Clear Branch Cemetary. My grandfather (Christopher Chandler) grew up on Big Branch, and says his dad Henry Ragan Chandler operated a sawmill on Big Branch somewhere. It might be that old group of buildings just above the falls on the left as you start up Big Branch. Grandpa says he remembers as a small child traveling through the woods over to his grandpa's house on what is now Corn Branch. Anyone having any information on where this sawmill might have been, will help us to locate where Grandpa and his dad lived back in the early 1910s-1920s. Wesley's father was Jack Chandler who disappeared between 1863 and 1968 and was married to Sarah L. Sams. She remarried Lorance Effler who is buried in Big Branch cemetery. We would love to hear from any Sams that may know what became of Sarah, not sure if she used her maiden name, the Chandler surname, or Effler, as she was widowed twice before she was 30 years old. My two brothers and I, we're in our 60s, spend the last couple days tramping around Flag Pond, Coffee Ridge, Big Branch and Corn Branch areas. What a wonderful area, with its bold creeks, beautiful open fields up on the ridge tops, and people are SO FRIENDLY. Thanks to all of you that we bumped in to these past few days, that had time to stop what you were doing, and give us some direction to cemetaries etc. David Chandler <david ccvn.com> Burnsville, NC USA - Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 20:47:49 (EDT) New photos of Jim b.1879 and Muncie Shelton family, Pete Shelton b.1856 and Hannah Shelton b.1877 family (Muncie's older sister); also, have photos of Sol Shelton family and Noah Shelton. Then later, with my wife, went back to visit again. We were intrigued with the area. No wonder our Edwards family, when they migrated to Arkansas, wanted to find a similar place in the hills. My question in addition to our need to locate information on our great, great grandfather, William Mitchell Edwards, who was listed on the 1860 U. S. Census in Flag Pond, is where did the name Edwards Branch come from? We hope to visit Flag Pond again soon. Dr. James D. Bryant <jamesbryant2 windstream.net> Harrison, AR USA - Monday, September 21, 2009 at 10:16:48 (EDT) My name is Raymond Edwards. My Great Great grandpa, William M Edwards lived in Flagpond, TN according to the 1860 census. I have visited Flagpond in the past and enjoyed it very much. It was before the interstate went through. We think we found the property where William used to own. I even went to E Tenn University and checked out their genealogical library and found copies of deeds for the property. His wife was Mary Ponder Edwards. They had 6 boys at home. The oldest three, John, James, and William I, went to Marshall NC and signed up to fight in the Confederacy. The 4th boy was my Great grandpa, Levi Edwards and he was too young to enlist. The two other sons were Joseph Clingman, and Mitchell. I have not been able to find my great grandpa Levi along with William I and Clingman moved to Arkansas after the Civil War. I have not been able to find any earlier or later record of William M and Mary. I would appreciate any help one has to offer.I am a retired Baptist preacher. I finished my seminary work at Southwestern in Ft. Worth, TX. I pastored a church in Manchester, KY for about 5 years. back in the 80s. That is when I made my first visit to Flagpond. They may have resented feeling trapped and contained to the area as children, but with our outsider envy of the "down home" that they enjoy (albeit taken for granted), they realize that they really love the place, and see why we fall in love with it too. If anyone has a family connection to Flag Pond, they realize they have a connection to almost every Family around. I have Sams, Wolfe, Briggs, and Chandler by blood. My favorite childhood memories are from there. Both sides of my family are from that area. The Sheltons and the Kings. Zeb Shelton is my grandfather and Bertha King is my Grandmother. Zeb was the son of Robert and Rachel Shelton...her maiden name is Dixon, and Bertha is the daughter of Roscoe and Matilda King...her maiden name was Hensley. My Great Aunts, Great Uncles, cousins, all reside in that area. Nothing but good memories remain from back in the holler, King Family reunions, blueberry picking, sniper hunting, going to a singing on any day of the week, the ice cold creek on a hot summers day, and 4-wheeling in the woods. Always seeking information on: GG-Grandparents: Henry "Harry" HENSLEY b. c.1825 in Washington County, TN. + Mary "Polly" SHELTON b. Madison County, NC daughter of Roderick SHELTON & Rachel MOORE G-Grandparents: George Washington HENSLEY, b. 1857 in Flag Pond, Washington County, TN. - d. 1947 in Walnut Creek, NC. + Milam Chandley Ramsey Shelton HENSLEY b. 1853 White Rock NC.- d. 1931 in Walnut Creek, NC - daughter of John CHANDLEY and Elizabeth HAIRE Mary Hensley became a widow approx 1864 - Harry died during the Civil War. She and her 7 children remained on the Hensley Homestead in Flag Pond, TN until her re-marriage in 1877 in Yancy County, NC to James HENSLEY. Mary was 40, James was 28. Deed Book #1 dated 1877- Unicoi County, NC - shows where Mary and James sold the Hensley Homestead in Flag Pond to a J .E. Tilson her children sold their portion of the property at that time, too. Mary was again a widow in the 1890's as she tried to collect James' pension. She had also applied for Harry's pension. All of the children of Henry Harry and Mary were born in Washington County, Tennessee. I can't find any information on any of the children other than my G-Grandparent George. I'm, searching for where their paths in life led them to--- (1) Christad Armstrong Hensley, b .c.1849 (2) Jane V. Hensley, b. c.1851/52 (3) Sarah Caroline Hensley, b. c.1853/54 (4) Rachel Hensley, b. c. 1855/56 (5) George Washington Hensley, b. 1857, d. I'd love to know where Mary POLLY Hensley and her 2nd husband James W. Hensley (Henry Harry's nephew) are buried..... They were married in Yancey County NC... and I can't figure out why-- since James was born and lived in Washington County TN, too. ?? I know she became a widow again because she also applied for James' pension in 1890, too. The census' state that Mary was born in NC-- but I find no records about her birth anywhere in NC --not even in the archives. Her parents were married in (1820) and also lived in Washington County TN. for a while before moving back to Shelton Laurel, NC.... Are there still any descendants of these Hensley siblings living in Flag Pond? I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about my ancestors. Thank you! He wanted me to go along, I had never been there nor had I met any of my family from there, so we traveled using my older brothers' Lee Horace Shelton's 1962 blue Chevy Impala from New Jersey to Tennessee. We arrived at Devil's fork to an old country store with 100 year old oak floors. It was a capsule frozen in time to the early 1900 th's. A bearish looking older man with a slight limp lumbered over to me and proceeded to hug the guts out of me and sandpapered my face with his grisly two day old unshaven face. I had met my oldest Uncle Roscoe born 1905.After trying to bridge the peculiar language difference from Jersey City to mountain people from Flag Pond, Horace and I drove up to the reason for the visit, Olin Shelton, born 1909, my dad's third oldest brother had recently lost a son, Specialist Bobby James Shelton to the war in Vietnam. My dad being a veteran of the "Battle of the Bulge" in 1945 WW2 campaign, he wanted to lend support to Olin and his wife Florence, a school teacher. Olin's place was a short ride up the winding mountain road of Devil's fork gap, just a couple of miles up from Uncle Roscoe's store. We stayed with Olin and Florence for the entire trip. Their house was modest looking 1920 vintage brightly colored home with a front porch for rocking. Inside was warm wood tones with pictures of their three boys, Gordon, Fletcher and Bobby James Shelton. Olin was a short, thin and rugged looking man with a clearly chiseled face resembling his younger brother Horace. He would take me on his wasp ridden porch and proudly point to the tops of the mountain ridge that belonged to him. Forence was a thin grandmotherly speckled white haired woman with a touch of sadness from her recent loss. Her kitchen had a big old iron stove that seconded for a home heater when she prepared delicious country breakfast, lunch and dinner meals straight from the farm they lived on. Home made jams, biscuits, eggs and the like. Across from their home was the old oak cattle barn and a path to the steep upper cattle fields for their feeding. Also, My father, Horace, took me to a Shelton cemetary on a little knoll on the way to the upper feeding cattle fields that overlooked the valley below. The gravestone of family past faced east waiting for the Resurrection day to break forward as promised. A beautifully peaceful vistage misted by the Smokey mountain mornings. Their his family laid. He requested me to note the location he would be buried and showed the location next to him for my mother, his wife, Elizabeth Chupka Shelton (b.1919 in Sumiac, Slovakia.). Back in front of Olin and Florence's place, a steep winding road led up to the top of the holler and the state line of North Carolina, where Maybess Shelton Williams and Bud Williams relatively modern brick home was perched. Maybess (b.1922) was my dad's second youngest sister. We traveled this path many times during our stay, passing Oscar Ray's uncle home (where my mom Elizabeth Chupka Shelton and two young children: Lee Horace (b.1940) and James Andrew Shelton (b.1942) stayed when my father was mustered to war. Mom was always grateful to Oscar Ray and his wife for the hospitality shown her during her first years from Slovakia in this country. A little further up the mountain road at the fork of the old Sweetwater church, where in 1980, my family would later have Horace Shelton's funeral. Lived my Grandpa Neely's(Cornelius Shelton b.1853) son Jake Shelton who was my father's father, James Andrew Shelton half brother. His porch always occupied by two enormous hound dogs that hunted the mountains. My dad would later after retirement from Manufactures' Hanover trust in New York City in 1979,live in this holler in a trailer(see pictures). Back at the fork in the rode at the Sweetwater church towards Maybess' home, lived Royal (b.1910 fourth oldest brother of Horace) and Flossie Shelton. Royal a tall lean dark haired man resembling my father, Horace, was a lumber mill owner with his sons. Fossie, his wife was thin and medium statue woman with dark hair and eyes. Royal would later take me squirrel hunting in the big hickory forest that surrounded his home. Later in years, about in the fall of 1990,this writer, would revisit Royal and Flossie Shelton home again. Royal was on his deathbed. And Flossie invited me in to talk to him. When I walked in, Royal thought, I was Horace and was taken back a bit. I'm actually looking for some information on Flag Pond. Let me introduce myself. My name is Dorothy Stuart. During the mid 1920's to very early 1930's my grandfather, Benjamin C. Stuart was the pastor of the Flag Pond Presbyterian Church that was in existence then. My question is this--is there still a Presbyterian Church there? Or, is there more than one? Actually my grandfather served two churches there, one in Flag Pond and one at Rocky Fork. I hope someday to see both churches--if they are still in existence. I doubt if anyone who was a part of the congregations of those two churches is still around. If there is anyone who would remember my grandfather, they would have to be in their 90's or so. But, I am curious if the churches are there. Any information on this would be helpful. Thank you Dorothy Stuart<djstuart1650 sbcglobal.net> We bought some beautiful mountain land from Les Callahan. My Great grand parents were Andy and Catherine Shelton Blankenship. Did not see how to sign the Guest Book, but would like to find the location of Andy's (Andrew Jackson) and Catherine's home place. Their son Abraham Turner Blankenship came to Cherokee and married a Cherokee (Arizona Swayney) from which there are a lot of Blankenship's here now on the Tribal Rolls.
The story was that they lived on Big Laurel and got their mail at Flag Pond.
We were all over Shelton Laurel and visited the grave sites of the Shelton Massacre.
Andy's father was Pressley and mother was Sarah Blankenship. Supposedly Pressley and son Lafettee where killed by carpet baggers and placed on the front porch of the house. The story is that Andy got in trouble with the law and left for Vancouver, Canada and changed name to James Austin. He took his son William Nelson with him. He died in Portland, Or. and we have found his grave there. We have also located some decendants who we are to visit in May in Portland.

My grandmother was born there at Devils Fork. We know very little about her family. She ran away when she was eighteen years old. All she told us about her family was that her mother died when she was very young (possibly giving birth to her,) as she was the youngest child. I have heard two stories about her. One was that her parents were not married and the other was that they were. One of her parents was a Hensley and the other was a Shelton. The mother's name might have been Sally and the father's name Jim, but I don't know which one was the Hensley and which one was the Shelton. She told my mother that she went by Hensley at times and by Shelton at times. She married under Martha Hensley. She told me she had a sister named Maude and a sister named Pearl lee or Parlee I'm not sure, and a brother named Harrison and a brother named Garfield. I don't know if they went by Hensley or Shelton. She was raised in a Church of God. She was raised by a Briggs family. She said her uncle Henry Shelton, was a mail carrier in Greenville, Tn. and he helped her run away to Greenville, S.C. about 1918. There she met and married my grandfather Pierce Wykle and lived the rest of her life in Jackson County, N.C. She died in 1985. As far as I know her children have never met any of her family. My dad always wanted to meet someone from her side of the family but never got to. He passed away in 2005. There are only three of her children living at this time. If anyone thinks they might know any of her family, we would love to contact them if it would be ok. My dad was a very talented mountain singer and could play about any kind of bluegrass musical insterment that he wanted to play. I'm sure he inherited it from his Flag Pond roots. Betty Rose Hoyle Edwards from USA wrote on November 29. 2002, 00:25: E-Mail: tjajwilson charter.netHello, my name is Betty Rose and I live on Higgins Creek in Flag Pond. I am a descendent of William T. Higgins that founded Higgins Creek. He was a Civil War veteran, originally from Virginia. He donated the land for the church and the school. He married Amanda Smith and had one child, Cordelia, who married Andrew Hoyle, and one of their children was my father, Oscar Hoyle. I have lived in Flag Pond for many years. No matter where I have lived, my roots are in Higgins Creek, and I am happy to be living there. I have enjoyed looking at this website while visiting my family, and I liked looking at the pictures. My ancestors came from Flagpond and we are trying to find out historical information on them. We descend from John Lee Briggs through Bulo Briggs, who was my great grandfather, and is buried there. Any histories or photos of this family or family sites would be appreciated.
