I would like to hear from old friends in Flag Pond. I would like to go to the hills and dig Ramps. Me and Lester Rice would eat thoes. Then go to school. Myrtie Blankenship would send us home. The smell made her sick. Billy Fender

We attended our first Flag Pond Ramp Festival last year and we're really impressed with the food, people and wonderful family atmosphere. It is truly a wonderful time and all proceeds go to a good cause. We are looking forward to being there on May 10th for this years annual festival. Hoepfully, we will see some smiling faces from last year.

Flag Pond visit this past week end. My Great grand parents were Andy and Catherine Shelton Blankenship. Did not see how to sign the Guest Book, but would like to find the location of Andy's (Andrew Jackson) and Catherine's home place. Their son Abraham Turner Blankenship came to Cherokee and married a Cherokee (Arizona Swayney) from which there are a lot of Blankenship's here now on the Tribal Rolls.

The story was that they lived on Big Laurel and got their mail at Flag Pond.

We were all over Shelton Laurel and visited the grave sites of the Shelton Massacre.

Andy's father was Pressley and mother was Sarah Blankenship. Supposedly Pressley and son Lafettee where killed by carpet baggers and placed on the front porch of the house. The story is that Andy got in trouble with the law and left for Vancouver, Canada and changed name to James Austin. He took his son William Nelson with him. He died in Portland, Or. and we have found his grave there. We have also located some decendants who we are to visit in May in Portland.

Hi, I really enjoyed reading this. My father grew up in Flag Pond, Kenneth McIntosh, son of Axie And Richard McIntosh. My aunts and uncles known to you I'm sure ( Pauline, Martha, Garland, Foy, Howard, AD and all the kin)as a child I spent time there on Grandpa's picking wild berries, eating well, loving the life that really was very hard on my grandparents. I'm a teacher in CA now, 48 years old, pretty sickly the last few years...not traveling but my mom has spent so much time with genealogy tracing Grandma's history to Sevier. So as I read here of Eldridge who I do recall, and recall walking his farm as he'd sold it picking up arrowheads with Dad, recall the names of Flag Pond heard all my life. I would love to know of my family, grandparents. I loved them and of course I know that you'll know things I only touch in memory. I'm at <smpuglisiFlag Pond Guest Bookgmail.com> Also 8054851126

I believe that my Gillis kin folk left east TN in the early part of the 1800s and moved into Madison County, NC. Labaron Gillis and Nathern Gillis are two paternal grandparents who I am trying to trace. Any help anyone can provide in my search is appreciated.

My grandmother, Lulu Morrow, was born in Flag Pond in 1900. Her mother was Lucinda Hensley, daughter of Joseph & Elizabeth Hensley. Her father was Elbert Vaughn Morrow. Would love to hear from anyone related. The Morrows moved to Priest River, ID in 1910. My grandmother always spoke very fondly of her Tennessee roots. Thanks!

My mother's family on her mother's side were all from Big Branch Community near Flag Pond...Efflers & Rice families. We used to go there each 2nd Sunday in June for "Decoration Day". Is that still held? Somebody please let me know! When I was a teenager, I dreamed of living my life out in a cabin up there somewhere. I'm 62 now and I still want to move to Big Branch and spend out my days there! Anybody know of anything? Contact me if you do! I'm serious! I don't need much..just something simple!

WOW, I'm speechless! I was born in Flag Pond, lived in the house straight across the street from the School. My parents came to the School and picked me up one day and we headed to North Carolina, I never went back home! I'll never be home until my body rest's on or in the Holy ground of Flag Pond, Tennessee! I was just as poor and without as anybody could ever be and it is my greatest gift! I have nothing but Love and Respect for my childhood. I have some Hot Wheels hiding in them there hills! GOD has blessed me, my wife and our children, and I pray He blesses anyone that has ever had any associationwith this Heaven Like Town! I have taken my family there many times as the kids got older and my completion would be to live there, I still have tons of Family there and I Love all of you and I Love Flag Pond!

Hello. Looking for any information on an Albert Shelton, or other members of the Shelton family who may have made banjos in the Flag Pond vicinity in the early 1900s. We have a "spice box banjo" in the collection of the Mercer Museum that is signed by an "Albert Shelton" and was made around 1910 or so. Would enjoy hearing from any Shelton descendants or relatives with information.

Read more about the threat at http://www.saverockyfork.org/ Rocky Fork is a recreation area that has been used for hiking, fishing, mountain biking and the area supports a rich variety of wildlife including Black Bear and Turkey.

Great Grandparents..Joseph & Elizabeth (Effler) Rice and many other relatives buried in the cemetery at Big Branch Church. As a kid, I wanted to build or find a cabin up in there and live my life there. Haven't made it yet. I'm 62 now... and still would love to have that cabin near Big Branch! I would love to communicate with folks in the Big Branch / Flag Pond area via email... anybody out there who'd like to...feel free to email me. Love your website. My father was born and raised there. His mother was Ruth Ellen Proffitt McFarland. Her father was Elbert S. Proffitt & her mother was Julie A. Blankenship Proffitt. Many are buried at Blankenship Cemetery off of Rice Creek Road way up on a hill. Anyone know of these people? Also, I have a photo of the old wood planked Flag Pond post office with several men, including my grandfather, sitting on the front porch. I'm guessing, based on my grandfather's age and the clothing style of the men, that it was taken about 1920. I'm going to ask the webmaster if they would like a copy. I visited Flag Pond last year and I just love it. Peggy

I have been to Flag Pond several times. It is a beautiful place. I feel connected there. My grandmother was born there at Devils Fork. We know very little about her family. She ran away when she was eighteen years old. All she told us about her family was that her mother died when she was very young (possibly giving birth to her,) as she was the youngest child. I have heard two stories about her. One was that her parents were not married and the other was that they were. One of her parents was a Hensley and the other was a Shelton. The mother's name might have been Sally and the father's name Jim, but I don't know which one was the Hensley and which one was the Shelton. She told my mother that she went by Hensley at times and by Shelton at times. She married under Martha Hensley. She told me she had a sister named Maude and a sister named Pearl lee or Parlee I'm not sure, and a brother named Harrison and a brother named Garfield. I don't know if they went by Hensley or Shelton. She was raised in a Church of God. She was raised by a Briggs family. She said her uncle Henry Shelton, was a mail carrier in Greenville, Tn. and he helped her run away to Greenville, S.C. about 1918. There she met and married my grandfather Pierce Wykle and lived the rest of her life in Jackson County, N.C. She died in 1985. As far as I know her children have never met any of her family. My dad always wanted to meet someone from her side of the family but never got to. He passed away in 2005. There are only three of her children living at this time. If anyone thinks they might know any of her family, we would love to contact them if it would be ok. My dad was a very talented mountain singer and could play about any kind of bluegrass musical insterment that he wanted to play. I'm sure he inherited it from his Flag Pond roots. May God bless you all.Mary!

Enjoyed reading all comments. When I was a young girl, my father fished in the Flag Pond area. There was a little restaurant, Country Kitchen located at the trun off to Devils Fork or Rock Fork, that he and his fishin buddies would stop and eat. He took me and my mother there too, of course that was when he wasn't fishing. I am getting the camper packed to go to Rock Creek Recreation Area with my Friends. I have never been there, but they tells me it's beautiful. Will see ya'll on the streets of Erwin and in the Mountain Wilderness of Flag Pond soon.

Harrison served during the war. He died in the late /50's in AZ where he is buried. My husband and I are making a trip to Flag Pond in October '07. We are looking to see where this side of his family called home. Harrison was the son of Francis Marion Horn and Ida McCracken. I'd love to hear from anyone what may know more about any of these families. Also, I have heard there is a Horn/Horne cemetary out there someplace where his family was buried. I ended up eating a few ramps in 60 seconds. After the ramp eating contest, my friends slowly started to back away, this is call the "ramp effect" just remember when you eat a lot of ramps, some people will avoid you.....

Hopefully some of his distant relatives may still be in the area. His name is Anderson Moore, he died in NC, I think his wife's name was Biddy, He had a daughter named Rosia who married Andrew Bishop, she died when my grandmother was 17 ( Cora Bishop Jones) if you know of this family please let me know. Anderson was over 100 when he died, and he was in the Civil war.

The waterfall you are calling Spivey Falls is:
1. Lower Spivey Falls or sometimes called Chandler Cove Falls because these are located in Chandler Cove, near Chandler Cove Road.
2. These falls are not located in or near the area commonly called Flag Pond. These falls are referred to as up Spivey or on Spivey Mountain (which of course does not exist).
3. The waterfall locally referred to as Spivey Falls (but geologically named Falls Gap Falls is located another approximate mile up Spivey Mountain Road (19W ).

Recently visited east Tennessee and loved it so much my wife and I decided to look for land or a small home to purchase. By accident I found the Flag Pond website and can't tell you how much we have enjoyed it. We are inspired to visit Flag Pond in the near future. I am sure it will be as terrific as the website and hopefully become a new home for us. Thanks again for exposing us to Flag Pond.

My husband's grandparents were Thomas Melvin Mashburn and Estelle Chandler, from Flag Pond. I have about 100 deeds and land grants for that area before and after Unicoi was formed. The names on these deeds are Blankenship, Chandler, Edwards, Harris, Hensley, Higgins, etc! I have what appears to be the original Civil War discharge paper for Armstong Harris. I was wondering if someone familiar with the Mashburn's/Chandler's would look at a photo I have of 20 family members. I can't figure out who they are. I almost feel like I know some of your families, from my genealogy research. Keep up the good work on the web site.

Hey Flag Pond! My grandparents lived at the head of Rice Creek and I used to spend every summer there when I was growing up. I love Flag Pond and miss it very much. It is God's own country. I have lots of aunts, uncles and cousins still there. My mother was a Rice. She told me that the way Flag Pond came to be named, was because a soldier (during the civil war, I believe) planted a flag (I'm not sure what kind of a flag, whether American, Union or Confederate) in a pond (which is no longer there) to let others who were following, know that was the area he had scouted. But that's the way the community came to be named Flag Pond. Anyhow, that's the story I was told. What other stories have been told about the naming of Flag Pond? I am related to the Silvers, Briggs and Cantrells.

I have been looking through old family papers and found evidence of my great, great, great grandmother, Mary Janet Etler (born 9/7/1846 married Isaac L. McCaslin 2/27/1846, listed as being from Sweet Water, Tenn. I can't find that place in Tenn., but found your Sweet Water church. Do you have any info. for me. I am hopeful that you do, since my family were all poor farm folk who moved west. The McCaslins were from Missouri.
Thanks so very much. Janet Porter

Over the past couple of years I have went through hundreds of web sites looking for a new place to live. I just had to let you know that of all the web sites I've so far came upon, yours is the best. You have done a great job. I would have preferred to have seen more pictures of the spring and fall or winter happenings. Understandable you were impressed with the waterfalls, how ever it cost on your website pictures. I also would have liked to have seen more of the country side surround the town of Erwin and Flagpond. Maybe with trees blooming. The one thing many websites have that you don't seem to is a webcam or live webcam. That is how I find most of the places I want to check out. You might like to consider these suggesting, however, that won't change the fact that you have the best community web site I've found. Any small improvement would only make it better.
Cogradulations on your work.

I miss the mountains, the creek, the sleigh riding and racing from all the way up at Gentry's place, where the road is often completely full of water runnels! I miss all ya'll! I haven't been back there in about 5 years, since Dad sold the cabin. How is that Interstate treating you? Love-Anna Lee Strimas

I have always admired Flagpond. We went up Rocky Fork today and walked a forest road for about 2 hours. The road that follows the creek back in the mountains. We were looking for a pond, or ponds, that we were told are back there someplace. We came up empty on this journey. We hike the App. Trail and any other remote places we find. We, includes my two son-in-laws. I live in Gray Tn. and retired from Eastman in 1998. I know some people in Flagpond. Tiptons, Sheltons, Clonce and Tilsons. I have a neighbor, Foy Mcintosh, that was born in Flagpond.
Thanks for the nice web page

We stayed at the school in Flagpond in summer 2002 while working on the Appalachia Service Project; staying in the school was quite an experience; my husband, 21 yr. old daughter & myself were part of a group of 17 from Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Williamsport MD.; I just wanted to let you know I fell in love with TN.; we came back in the fall 2002 for the Festival in Erwin & visited with the family we helped & also took them to dinner; they really touched my heart; I thought maybe I would not get so involved with "our family" BCS my husband & I run a soup kitchen yr. round & also are very active in our cold weather shelter. We were very blessed by our experience & hope to come back sometime this summer.

I still have loads of family that live there and I am currently working on a genealogy project. Thanks to the Internet, I have been able to collaborate and find an abundance of information on historical data conveniently in my home in Europe. I hope your website will extend to offer local family history postings and stories that will enable other folks with which to collaborate.

My grandfather was originally from Flag Pond. His name was Eldridge Nelson McIntosh. He had a brother named Richard. Richard's wife was Aunt Axie. I can remember going to Uncle Richard's long ago. I remember visiting a cemetery that was way up on top of a hill; the place where my ancestors are buried.
